Generate any good ideas lately? My line of work is often all about generating ideas. If you’re having trouble in this area, remember that you don’t have to wait until a concept is fully formed to take your first action. Start with the “seed” of an idea, and see where it takes you!


It might be time to reinvigorate your business with some new ideas. But where are these great new ideas going to come from?

Whether you’re looking for ideas for new products, improvements to your existing products, marketing strategies or anything else, the ability to generate ideas is a skill that, like any other skill, can be learned.

Here are some techniques that might be helpful for you:

  • Define the problem. What is the issue for which you want ideas?
  • Start fresh. Let go of your preconceived notions of what works, what’s “impossible,” etc. Be open to anything and everything.
  • List your pet peeves. What is it that annoys you about this issue? Chances are these things annoy others, too. How can you improve things?
  • Listen. Eavesdrop on other people’s conversations. Ask your customers what their three biggest challenges are. Look for patterns in what you’re hearing, and use these patterns to generate ideas.
  • Get others to ask you questions. Ask people who are not familiar with the issue to ask you questions about it. They may ask you something that leads to a great idea.
  • Look at other industries. See what’s being done in other industries and think about how you can adapt and apply these ideas to your business.
  • Focus on quantity. Brainstorm a whole lot of ideas, let these ideas lead you to more ideas, and so forth. Quantity breads quality. Eventually, a great idea might bubble to the surface.
  • Try new things. Strive to have a lot of new experiences in your life. Try new foods, read something different, travel to new places, meet new people. All of these new experiences will give your mind additional fuel to make the connections that lead to new ideas.
