A few years ago “delight” was a big buzzword in marketing. My recent experiences planning my wedding brought this word back to mind. Some of my interactions with potential vendors were delightful…and others were not. And you can bet this played into my decisions regarding which ones to hire and which didn’t make the cut!



MARKETING LESSONS FROM MY RECENT WEDDING

As many of my clients know, two months ago, after 20 years of singlehood, I got married. Although this is a second marriage for both of us, we opted to have a traditional wedding, complete with dinner, dancing and a nice-sized crowd of our friends and family members.

Planning what turned out to be one of the best and most joyous days of my life took a lot of research. I spoke to event venues, photographers, DJs, florists and more. Looking back on this from the marketing perspective, here is what I learned:

  • Networking with the “influencers” pays off. When the Event Coordinator at our wedding venue recommended a particular DJ company, her glowing praise of how wonderful these folks are held a lot of weight. I ended up hiring this company…and was very glad that I did! There’s nothing like word-of-mouth advertising.

  • Your website really does matter. There’s a good chance this will be a prospect’s first contact with your company.You must make a good impression! If your website does not look professional, they’ll assume that you are not professional. And if a prospective customer cannot easily find the basic information about your services that they’re looking for, they’re likely to give up. Don’t assume that people will pick up the phone and try to get this information out of your customer service representatives.

Speaking of customer service…

  • You’ll be judged by your initial customer service. Or lack of it. Yes, you really do need to answer the phone and respond quickly to inquiries. I was surprised to discover that some of these service providers took three or four business days to respond. I didn’t want to deal with that type of poor customer service throughout the planning process, so I went elsewhere.

The bottom line: Ignore the “basics” at your peril.
